Government talking point

Federal law requires a formal adjudication of mental incompetence before a veteran is barred from buying firearms, yet GOP lawmakers insist that merely getting financial help costs veterans their gun rights. By portraying themselves as rescuers from an invented bureaucratic abuse, they invert reality to rally support and push a broader anti-regulation agenda.

“Protect veterans” sounds pretty rich coming from politicians who routinely vote against expanding VA staffing, mental health funding, toxic exposure care, and affordable healthcare access. Also, this talking point leaves out a pretty important detail: the VA doesn’t just randomly “strip gun rights.” The reporting issue historically involved veterans deemed legally unable to manage their own financial affairs and assigned fiduciaries — and even that policy has been heavily challenged and debated for years. Acting like combat veterans are getting rounded up by the VA over a PTSD diagnosis is pure Facebook fear-bait. If Congress really wants to protect veterans, maybe start with reducing suicide rates, fixing staffing shortages, improving rural access, and fully funding the PACT Act implementation. Veterans need healthcare, housing, and mental health services too — not just politicians cosplaying as constitutional guardians every election cycle. The “support the troops” crowd always gets real quiet when the conversation shifts from AR-15s to actual appropriations.

So let me get this straight. …. Mr Clyde is upset that a person who isn’t stable or competent enough to manage their own finances isn’t also able to have a gun? Really? You have spent the last year and a half arguing that people on snap can’t have a soft drink because it is irresponsible to allow someone getting help to decide if the $2 coke is acceptable over a $2$ bottle of water but you want to allow a person with no ability to run their own finances a $$$$$ gun purchase that could actually be used to hurt or kill someone when their life gets even more desperate from those bad decisions? I’m all for helping beterans, but if you actually give a sh*t about them Mr Clyde (you don’t, but if you did) you would be focusing your efforts on programs to help the veterans who have reached this level of dependence on others move towards true independence and health.

Our Veterans, especially those Veterans who sustained injury in defense of our country, should get the best access to healthcare, housing and education. We enjoy our freedom because they put their lives on the line protecting our country.

Am I to understand that a person who can’t manage their affairs is entitled to a handgun? Does that sound like a good idea?

What about veterans' healthcare and other benefits? Affordable housing? I would think those things are at least as important? Fight for those too!

Your so gun pro that you'd submit a resolution to allow a 5-year old to carry a gun to school because he has to protect himself from bullies.

My challenge to you, Rep. Claudia Tenney, is to reconcile a citizen’s right to bear arms with a citizen’s right to be and feel safe in their community.
