Memorial Day - a time to reflect upon those who died in their unwavering sacrifice in the fight against fascism, religious extremism, racism, dictatorships, malice, amorality, and hate. Let us carry their spirit with us as we celebrate the freedom they fought so hard to protect, and carry on their strength yet today.

...It is an important commemoration! And it is especially important that the United States understands the importance of good allies over the decades, such as NATO. You should also honor the police officers who protected the Senate from the attack of thugs and criminals.

#MemorialDay is a day of unity. It calls on us to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service to the United States, as well as the veterans who continue to embody courage and dedication. It is time to reflect on the values that define America. Freedom, justice, equality, and human dignity are not abstract ideals; they are principles that must be renewed through our actions and upheld in our communities.

Whether, Veterans Day, or Memorial Day, when an American citizen thanks you for your service, accept it with grace and resist any urge to correct them. Your fallen comrades cannot accept their gratitude, so do so on their behalf.

I keep seeing people say that any political discussion is “out of line” on Memorial Day. I disagree — respectfully, but firmly. Talking about our government, our responsibilities, and the state of our democracy is one of the ways we honor the people who died to protect these rights. They didn’t serve so we would stay silent. They served so we could speak, debate, and stay informed. And let’s remember something important: Veterans exist on every side of every political debate. No one “owns” their service. Look at Arizona alone — John McCain and Senator Mark Kelly. One Republican, one Democrat. I probably disagree with both of them on plenty of issues. But they were (and are) honorable men who served this country with courage. The responsibility they carried in uniform didn’t end with them. It was passed to us — the living — to stay informed, to know the facts about our government, and to participate in our democracy with clarity and honesty. If anything, Memorial Day is exactly the right time to remember that freedom isn’t maintained by silence. It’s maintained by citizens who pay attention.

I am not a member of the military, but this year on Memorial Day as we solemnly remember those that have fought and died to defend the Constitution, democracy, and the freedoms of those around the world, let us keep a keen eye towards defending those freedoms here at home. We do them an extreme disservice and make their sacrifice null and void if we cave to those enemies foreign or domestic that seek to destroy the freedoms that every American, and indeed all persons within the United States, are given by the Constitution. Let us not let their sacrifice be in vain.

MEMORIAL DAY 2026 From the very beginning of our new republic, Many men have taken up arms to defend it. Men called into battles in distant foreign lands, And this is the day we honor the heroes fallen. Brave young men and grizzled veterans rose up. To serve their country and defend the trodden. Leaving loved ones to wait upon their return, Lights burning in windows as their guide home. Young men and women leaving home to early, Entering the hell of warfare and fear of death. Yet they bravely engage in a life foreign to them, Where mankind reaches its lowest level of life. The beaches and fields bleed as soldiers lay dying, For each piece of soil extracts a life for freedom. There may come a time mankind sees their folly, I have waited a lifetime to see just a glimmer. I had served my country proudly as a young man, While sadly some of my comrades fell into silence. Loved ones at home always hoping the carnage, Shall end one day and peace lights up the night. Mothers and fathers kneeling in their daily prayers, Dreading always the arrival of that military escort. The signal that their fallen hero is gone forever. The tears never dry as they weep over graves. As a nation we stand in silent prayer on this day, To honor all the soldiers who have gone before us. May God hold our fallen heroes tender in his love, As we call out the names of all the fallen today. T. Michael Daly SGT. USAF/USA

Memorial Day exists in a complicated emotional space. For many people, it is personal. A day connected to grief, family, service, loss, memory, and sacrifice. And some of that is deeply human. People remember fathers, mothers, siblings, children, friends, and communities shaped by war. They remember people they loved. But holidays tied to national identity can also reveal something larger about systems, belonging, and collective psychology. Because national rituals often do more than honor loss. They also shape identity. They help societies decide which sacrifices are remembered, which stories are repeated, which forms of loyalty are celebrated, and which questions feel acceptable to ask publicly. And that doesn’t automatically make the ritual bad. Humans need meaning-making rituals. We need collective grieving. We need ways to process loss together. But systems also understand the emotional power of symbolism. Especially symbols connected to patriotism, sacrifice, protection, fear, heroism, national unity, and moral identity. Which means Memorial Day can become emotionally layered. For some people, the day centers grief and gratitude. For others, it can also carry tension: grief mixed with political disillusionment, love for people who served mixed with anger toward leaders, appreciation for sacrifice mixed with questions about war itself, patriotism mixed with concern about nationalism, belonging mixed with alienation. And many people feel pressure to simplify those emotions. To either “support without questioning” or “question without honoring.” But human reality is usually more complicated than that. You can honor human sacrifice, care about veterans, feel empathy for military families, and still ask difficult questions about systems, power, war, politics, propaganda, or leadership. Those things are not mutually exclusive. In fact, one of the recurring patterns across many systems is the pressure to collapse complexity into loyalty tests. Where questioning becomes interpreted as betrayal. Where grief becomes politicized. Where symbols become emotionally fused with obedience. And once that happens, people often stop speaking honestly about what they truly feel. Not because they have no thoughts. But because belonging feels safer than complexity. The Seeing Clearly, Staying Human lens tries to hold both things at once: To recognize systems and patterns clearly — without losing empathy for actual human beings inside them. Because behind every symbol, every flag, every political argument, and every national ritual, there are still humans. Humans grieving. Humans searching for meaning. Humans trying to belong. Humans trying to make sense of sacrifice. And staying human means resisting the urge to flatten people into categories, even during emotionally charged cultural moments. You’re allowed to notice the systems. And you’re also allowed to remain compassionate toward the people inside them. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1CpYVuZo71/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Thank You Congressman Vince Fong for honoring all the servicemen and their families whose loved ones were veterans in the military. I am sorry to say, but that is the ugliest national cemetery I have seen yet--the ground is so barren with no grass. So, lifeless. I live next to March Air Reserve Base (formerly Air Force), which is next to Riverside National Cemetery off the 215 Freeway and Van Buren Boulevard. Me and my brother (retired USAF) would go to the cemetery before and after the Memorial Day Holiday. During the holiday weekend, there would be so many visitors coming to the cemetery to view and take pictures of the flags all over the gravesites, that it is extremely hard to get our car through the road as many cars block both sides. It is a beautiful sight to see all the flags upon the green grass. Plus, there is usually a motorcycle parade by West Coast Thunder of Riverside making their procession down Van Buren Boulevard on Memorial Day, stopping over Riverside National Cemetery, then going through the 215 Freeway going South to whatever designated casino they would arrive to for the day to finish their motorcycle procession honoring our veterans. Thank You to all those honoring our Veterans on this Memorial Day Weekend!
