But Ben, you just posted a list of the things that would increase public confidence in elections on your other page a couple of hours ago, and that list is not the same as the SAVE Act. It includes things like: - Early, in person voting for at least 2 weeks before Election Day - Make election day a national holiday - Allow convicted felons to vote after serving their time - Automatic voter registration for all eligible voters - Making voting by mail legal for everyone - Same day voter registration These are the kind of things Americans want in our election system. And of course the big one, most Americans want "all voters to show government-issued photo identification." But that's not what the SAVE Act does. A standard driver's license alone does not qualify in most states. A REAL ID alone does not qualify. A military ID alone does not qualify. A tribal ID alone does not qualify. An ID card from a state university does not qualify. Those are all government-issued photo identifications, they are all legal in Virginia today, they would all be invalid if this bill passes. In fact, only five states even issue enhanced driver's licenses that meet the bill's requirements on their own. If you don't live in one of those states, you will almost certainly need to get more documentation, and all those kinds of documentation cost money. Do you know what that makes this? It's a poll tax. Which is specifically forbidden by the constitution.
