Donald Trump is threatening to sue a progressive think tank, and possibly the people who fund it, after researchers concluded that his enormously expensive National Guard deployments have failed to reduce violent crime. The Center for American Progress analyzed Trump's deployments in cities including Washington and Los Angeles and found no evidence that they changed the existing downward trend in violent crime. “Across multiple cities, multiple data sets, and multiple time windows, we find no effect that violent crime actually did change post the National Guard deployments in any of the cities,” Associate Director Chandler Hall explained Monday on C-SPAN. That's a devastating conclusion considering the Trump administration has already spent more than $1.7 billion on the crackdown. And the meter is still running. Trump's Washington deployment, originally presented as a short-term emergency measure, has now been extended through January 2029 at an estimated additional cost of $1.4 billion. It's true crime in D.C. is falling, with homicides down 32 percent compared with last year, but it was already falling before Trump's troops arrived -- and CAP found no measurable evidence that the intervention accelerated the decline in violent crime. And apparently Trump was watching. Hall appeared on the obscure C-SPAN program Washington Journal at 9:25 Monday morning, during Trump's “Executive Time.” Soon afterward, the president erupted on Truth Social, denouncing the report as a “Radical Left SCAM” produced by a “gaggle of Lunatics.” Then came the trademark threat. “This will be met with a lawsuit, which is being drawn now,” Trump declared. “I am also strongly considering adding some of the contributors to this Fake Organization.” Trump proceeded to name CAP supporters including George Soros, Bill and Melinda Gates, Google, Apple, Visa, Goldman Sachs, Walmart, Toyota, T-Mobile and NBC Universal. Hall wasn't claiming the deployments accomplished nothing. He acknowledged a decline in opportunistic property crimes such as theft and vandalism associated with the increased presence. But on Trump's central justification for sending troops into American cities – violent crime – CAP found no measurable change in the trajectory already underway. A separate analysis by the nonpartisan Niskanen Center reached a similar conclusion about Washington.
