Government talking point

Posts fold a public-health observance into political cheer-leading, crediting the president’s immigration enforcement for lives saved while ignoring treatment, harm-reduction, and supply-chain factors. The selective framing inflates the leader’s role and simplifies a complex crisis for partisan gain.

Oh right. Making penalties harsher for users is definitely going to help cut fentanyl deaths. Dead people hate serving more time in prison. Such a simple-minded response to a complex problem. But at least you get to brag about how much you care.

Today is National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day. I want to say something about it from where I'm standing here in Eddy County. I've never touched opiates. Fentanyl has never been my drug. But I am a recovered addict, so I know what addiction can do to a person, to the people who love them, and to a whole community. I see it every day. My neighbor is struggling with fentanyl. I see her daily. I see people coming and going from that RV, and after a few days they just look awful. It's scary to see. Sometimes it's so quiet in there I don't know if they're alive or dead, and that feeling sits heavy on you. It breaks my heart because whether it's fentanyl or any other substance, it doesn't just hurt the addict. It hurts everyone closest to them. Fentanyl has changed everything. It's not even what people think they're buying anymore. Pills are counterfeit, drugs are laced with God knows what. Someone can think they're taking one thing and it could be their first and last time. One bad pill can be the last decision someone ever makes. The videos I see, the articles I read, the friends of friends and families who have lost someone - it's horrible. That's why I believe Narcan should be free and available. Keep it in your car. Keep it in your house. Learn how to use it. I get why some people worry - does having it make someone feel like they can keep using? I have had that thought too. But I also know this: you can't recover if you're dead. Keeping someone alive isn't enabling them. It's giving them a chance to have a chance. We also have to stop with the name-calling. Calling someone a junkie doesn't help them get sober. Making fun of them doesn't do anything. Treating addiction like they're a bad person instead of a person going through something awful just pushes them further away. That's somebody's kid. Somebody's mom. Somebody's brother. Somebody's neighbor. Accountability matters. Recovery takes real work. I believe that with my whole heart - I have lived it. But a person has to stay alive long enough to be able to do that work. In Eddy County, we've lost too many already. Too many young people, too many parents, too many friends. If someone is struggling, don't write them off. If someone overdoses, use Narcan and call for help. If someone asks for treatment, help them get through that door while they're willing to walk through it. If you're in recovery - don't ever forget how far you've come. Fentanyl was never my drug, but this fight matters to me because these are our people. These are our neighbors. Awareness is good. Keeping people alive is better. #FentanylAwarenessDay #EddyCounty #CarryNarcan #EndOverdose #RecoveryIsPossible

Your post prompted me to do a little research on fentanyl. It is and should be a major concern in our society and many medical organizations are addressing it. A good thing the gov is also addressing it. Within the drug info I found, this fact showed up. I thought I’d pass along the following to you: (CDC). Drug overdoses and poisonings are now the THIRD-leading cause of pediatric deaths in this country, ************************* AFTER FIREARM related injuries ************************* and MOTOR VEHICLE crashes.1 So tell me Katy, what say you about FIREARM deaths to children. If guns don’t kill people, neither do pills. It’s the people that make them available and accessible.
