Government talking point

GOP officials blanket social media with patriotic tributes to “hard-working Americans,” using the holiday’s feel-good imagery to identify their party with the working class while deflecting attention from policies that weaken unions and cut worker protections. The coordinated posts convert a non-partisan celebration into branding for Trump-era economic nationalism.

Happy Labor Day! Today, I’m thankful for unions and the workers who fought, and sometimes risked everything, to build a better working life for all of us. Because of organized labor and the people who took to the streets to demand better conditions, we have things many of us now take for granted: the 40-hour workweek, minimum wage laws, child labor protections, workplace safety standards, overtime pay, weekends, and the right to organize. These rights weren’t simply handed to workers. People fought for them. They marched, organized, went on strike, and stood together because they believed working people deserved dignity, safety, and a fair chance to make a living. And yet, we continue to see efforts, particularly from Republican lawmakers and conservative groups, to weaken unions and make it harder for workers to organize and collectively bargain. When unions are weakened, workers lose an important voice in the workplace. So today, let’s remember what Labor Day is actually about: working people. Thank you to every worker who came before us and fought for the rights we have today, and to the workers who continue that fight for the generations that come next. Happy Labor Day. Stand with workers. Stand with unions.

Gary, you do know that Labor Day honors progressive programs such as overtime, the minimum wage, health care coverage, 40 hour work weeks, workplace safety, pensions, unions, the right to organize, on and on. Here it is: Trent Kelly's obligatory Labor Day post. Labor Day wasn't created simply to celebrate workers. It emerged from a struggle over the relationship between workers, employers, and political power. The Department of Labor itself describes it as a celebration of the “social and economic achievements” of American workers, rooted in the labor movement of the late 19th century. The first Labor Day parade was held in New York in 1882, and Congress made it a national holiday in 1894. And many of the things we now regard as ordinary features of working life were not gifts bestowed by enlightened employers: 🔹 the eight-hour workday 🔹 restrictions on child labor 🔹 the minimum wage 🔹 overtime protections 🔹 workplace safety regulation 🔹 collective bargaining 🔹 limits on exploitation and abusive working conditions 🔹 weekends and other forms of paid or protected time off The Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, for example, prohibited oppressive child labor, established a federal minimum wage, and imposed a maximum workweek. These reforms came after decades of organizing, strikes, political activism, and sometimes enormous personal sacrifice by workers. Trent is on the wrong side of history! He and his party want to kill Labor Unions and take away rights of workers that are celebrated on Labor Day. He wants to cut and ultimately end Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, and other programs that came out of the progressive movement and the New Deal. Trent traded his votes for corporate and billionaire PAC and lobbyist dollars. He betrays American and Mississippi workers and their families. His allegiance to his donors and illiberal, authoritarian kleptocracy is why he won't hold Town Halls, won't debate Cliff Johnson for Congress, or justify why Mississippians should give him another term to continue to harm us. His Labor Day wishes are hypocrisy. He's happy that workers are filling the coffers of the rich, he's happy that the wealthy are gaining more wealth on the backs of workers, and he's happy that the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us is growing. #wherestrent #cliffjohnsonforcongress

Thank your union for our labor and remember, if it wasn’t because of unions, 10 year old kids would be still working in mines, there’ll be no weekends off, Work safety or benefits. Also remember, Republicans land MAGA like Mast and Trump are against unions, because it’s all about profit, they’re always against workers rights and in the side of corporations and big business. Go and enjoy the holiday now.

Honoring workers requires more than posting a Labor Day graphic. It requires explaining the policies you voted for. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found that the law Mike Lawler supported will reduce resources for the poorest households by about $1,200 a year while increasing them for the wealthiest 10% by roughly $13,600. Trump’s tariffs have raised consumer prices, while cuts to Medicaid and food assistance fall on working families. His administration also weakened the independent labor board workers depend upon to enforce organizing and collective-bargaining rights. Yes, some workers benefit from the temporary deductions for tips and overtime, and that should be acknowledged. But when the entire package is measured—not merely advertised—the largest and most durable rewards flow upward. Celebrating labor is easy. Voting to give workers economic security and bargaining power is the real test.

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday of September to honor and recognize the American labor movement. According to labor historians, the US has the most violent labor history of any industrialized nation. Labor Day in the United States has deep roots in the 19th-century labor movement, which was heavily influenced by socialist and radical trade unions fighting for the eight-hour workday and basic workers' rights. In today's America, we are experiencing the entrenchment of corporate power and the dismantling of labor movements, which has resulted in falling real wages and increased working class acquiescence to exploitation. We are seeing the exploitation of the working class in America today, as it is the ultra-wealthy that controls our Government and buys representation in Congress. Kat Cammack doesn't care about the American worker. She is financially supported by the wealthy and special interest groups. Check out where she gets most of her political campaign donations from. That's why she doesn't work to lower the cost of living for the average American. She voted to increase the cost of healthcare for Americans. She voted for massive tax cuts for the rich, placing the nation's tax burden on the working class. She is one of the most disingenuous Representatives in Congress. Vote for change and get her out of Washington. She doesn't care about you. When you go to the grocery store each week and observe that the cost of food is increasing each time, remember that Kat Cammack helped to raise the cost of food. When you go to fill up your car with gas, remember that Kat Cammack did nothing to stop Trump's vanity war and nonsensical tarriffs. When you healthcare becomes unaffordable, remember that Kat Cammack is responsible. Remember that more cuts to healthcare are coming after the midterms because of Republicans like Cammack were afraid that they could not win the midterm elections if more healthcare cuts took effect before. This is unconscionable scheming by an uncaring Republican Congress.

Brian, honoring America’s workforce on Labor Day is easy. Standing up for working families when the cameras are off is the real test. You have backed some measures that help workers, including the overtime tax deduction. Credit where it is due. But your record also includes votes against major labor protections, including the 2020 PRO Act. Meanwhile, working Americans are getting crushed by housing, insurance, healthcare, food, fuel, and everyday costs. So spare us the photo op. If workers are truly the “backbone of our nation,” then start treating affordability, wages, benefits, and job security like more than a holiday talking point. #LaborDay #WorkingClass #BrianMast #Affordability #Workers #Accountability #FL21 #MayorJacobs
