Welles Remy Crowther unquestionably deserved this honor. But to me, his story also presents a striking contrast. Crowther ran toward danger. He repeatedly returned to help strangers escape, saved as many as 18 lives and ultimately sacrificed his own—all without seeking attention, praise or recognition. Even while honoring him, President Trump could not resist inserting himself into the moment, joking that Crowther had become “more famous than me” and recounting an unverified story in which firefighters supposedly carried Trump away from danger. Crowther made himself smaller so others could live. Trump too often makes himself the center of stories that should belong to others. One man’s actions demonstrated genuine courage, humility and self-sacrifice. That is the legacy we should be discussing today. Welles Remy Crowther was not merely a man wearing a red bandana. He was an example of what true heroism looks like.
