America should belong to all its people, not only those who agree with us or express their love for the country in the same way we do. Loving America can mean wanting it to be better, questioning its leaders, defending its principles, and standing up for our fellow citizens, even when we disagree. At a time when division is so easy to create, perhaps the wiser patriotism is to remember that disagreement does not make someone an enemy. A strong nation is not one where everyone thinks alike, but one where people can disagree passionately while still recognizing each other’s humanity and shared stake in the future. We need less “us versus them” and more “we the people.”
America belongs to everyone who lives in the countries that are found in North and South America. Criticizing what is wrong is a right of every citizen of their country.
