I respectfully disagree with Secretary Rubio's suggestion that Western civilization is headed toward decline. We face challenges, certainly, but our democratic institutions, freedoms and ingenuity remain strong. What concerns me more is the contradiction between his words and this administration's actions. You cannot preach the importance of Western values and strong alliances while pursuing policies that strain those very relationships and undermine confidence in our institutions. If we're serious about protecting Western civilization, we should start by strengthening democracy, respecting the rule of law and rebuilding trust with our allies. Those are the values worth defending.

EUROPE’S AWAKENING BEGINS WITH UNDERSTANDING WHAT MUST BE DEFENDED Today, the issue of defending Western civilization is ceasing to be an abstract discussion for Europe. This new understanding is becoming particularly visible in Germany. There is an increasingly noticeable desire to speak once again about what forms the foundation of the West: freedom, security, political responsibility, cultural continuity, and the ability to defend its own way of life. At the same time, a broader European circle of states is gradually forming around Germany—countries that are beginning to view these questions not as an abstract ideology, but as an issue concerning their own future. In this sense, one can speak of a kind of European awakening—a return to the understanding that a civilization survives only when it recognizes its own value and is prepared to defend it. And here, the American factor is especially important. Germany is increasingly seeking close strategic cooperation with the United States because the question of the transatlantic alliance goes far beyond defense alone. What is at stake is the preservation of a common political and civilizational space of the West. Therefore, Marco Rubio’s words about the defense of Western civilization can be understood not simply as an American appeal to Europe. They coincide with a process that is already developing within Europe itself: Germany is becoming increasingly aware of the need for a strong transatlantic bond, while more and more European states are beginning, alongside it, to redefine what exactly the West must preserve, defend, and pass on to the next generation.
