Congressman Palmer, I agree that political violence should be condemned every single time, without exception. I’m thankful the President and everyone at the dinner were safe. But if we are calling for civil discourse, accuracy has to be part of that. The Correspondents’ Dinner shooting is still under investigation, and while officials say the President was likely a target, they have not yet released a clear motive. It is fair to discuss the serious pattern of threats and attempts against President Trump, including Butler, the Florida golf course case, and now this incident. But tying multiple events together as one broad political narrative before the facts are fully known can inflame the very tensions we say we want to heal. Civil discourse starts with condemning violence — and also with being careful, factual, and consistent when leaders speak to the public.
Something is odd here. After shots were fired at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Trump posted on Truth Social recommending they “LET THE SHOW GO ON.” He also says the shooter was “apprehended” contradicting earlier reports that the shooter was dead. If shots were fired in the lobby of the Washington Hilton, that’s a crime scene. Standard protocol would require securing the entire venue, interviewing witnesses, and confirming there was only one shooter before anyone goes anywhere. Resuming a dinner party after a shooting at an event with the President, VP, and most of the cabinet in the room would be extraordinary. Something doesn’t add up yet. - copied
