Funding Lapse Stemmed From GOP Budget Block; Republicans Blame Democrats for DHS Shutdown

GOP accounts depict a 76-day Homeland Security funding lapse as a purely “Democrat shutdown,” even though Republican demands triggered and prolonged the impasse. By casting themselves as rescuers from a crisis of their own making, they invert blame to dodge accountability and rally supporters against Democrats.

Respectfully, Congressman, the Republican party currently holds the Presidency and the majority in both the House and Senate. If the DHS funding was stalled for 76 days, that reflects on the ability of the current majority to lead and pass legislation. It's hard to blame the minority party when your party holds the gavels and the White House.

For anyone buying into the us vs. them propaganda-The funding fight was specifically about immigration enforcement agencies like ICE and Border Patrol, not the entire department. Democrats supported funding the rest of DHS—things like TSA, FEMA, Coast Guard, and cybersecurity—while pushing for changes to how immigration enforcement operates. What actually happened is this: • Congress ended up passing a bill that funded most of DHS but excluded immigration enforcement. • Republicans then moved to fund those immigration agencies separately using budget reconciliation, a process that doesn’t need Democratic votes. • The shutdown lasted because both sides disagreed on whether to fund ICE/Border Patrol without restrictions, not because one side refused to fund the entire department. It’s BOTH sides issue. The more you know. 💫

It is telling that Republicans fail to admit that they are not willing to cooperate on any legislation. ICE keeps violating our constitutional rights. To be clear: TSA workers, Coast Guard members, and FEMA employees are going to get paid, and ICE did not get a blank check. Note this! This was a completely unnecessary shutdown. Speaker Johnson sat on this bipartisan DHS funding deal for WEEKS, Republicans refused to engage in serious negotiations, and these workers paid the price for all of it. Today, after 76 days, they passed the exact same deal. Not a better deal. Not a different deal. The SAME deal. For 76 days, the workers who keep our airports safe and respond when disasters hit went without a guaranteed paycheck because Washington Republicans decided their political games were more important than the people doing the work. These workers kept showing up for the American people. Washington Republicans spent 76 days proving they wouldn't do the same.
